World Cup 2018 draw

Recommended Posts

Thoughts?

England land a typically jammy group with Belgium, Panama and Tunisia.

Argentina look to have a couple of potential banana skins in Iceland and Nigeria, plus a decent Croatia side.

Group E looks like it could be tasty, Brazil, Serbia, Switzerland, Costa Rica.

Portugal and Spain drawn together in Group B. If either win that game, the loser may have Morocco breathing down their neck. Could get interesting.

Regardless of whether England win the group or finish as runners up a relatively soft passage to the quarters surely awaits with Colombia, Poland, Japan or Senegal in the second round.

Gets more interesting in the quarters. If England win their group, their likely opposition will be Brazil. If England finish runners up, they could potentially get the winners of Group F - probably Germany. I'm sure we can all agree either of those games in the quarter finals of a World Cup would be a mouth watering prospect.

You say that but England will likely fail to win a game no matter the opposition.

Well, to be more accurate no matter who the opposition are England always take the hard road. Wouldn't be surprised if they draw the first two, cue cries from Carlisle to Plymouth for the manager's P45. England will then pull it round with a late winner against Belgium, all of a sudden everything is alright. A comfortable 3-0 trouncing of the second round opposition follows, all of a sudden this is the best England team since 66 and the World Cup is surely coming home..............only for a penalty shootout against Germany or a Neymar 35 yard lob to dash hopes once again..........

That's because there are no easy games at this level - so the experts keep telling us, despite the fact they don't present problems for Italy, Germany, Spain and so forth.

They must pose some problems for Italy as they didn't make it. ;)

As for the draw. Very few scenarios would've been better for England to be honest. Belgium will be tough but we really should put the other two away. Panama have an average age if 34 or something silly like that ffs.

Must be the most underwhelming opening game of any tournament though...Russia vs Saudi Arabia...

It has some attraction for the purists and it's interesting in that it brings together teams from two different cultures, religions etc but yeah, thinking back to the openers we've had in the past it's not likely to bring in the four cans of Carling and petrol station England shirt brigade. For some reason in 2006 FIFA changed to having the opening games featuring the defending champions to the host nation. That's fine when the host nation is Germany or Brazil, but less likely to bring in the casual fan when the home team is South Africa or Russia.

Is it right the last knockout game we won was in 2002? I can't remember when we won one before then (in normal time)

Not quite, beat Ecuador 1-0 in the second round in 2006 in normal time. Not managed the feat since!

...

Fair point. I was thinking more in terms of it being the general drivel we trot out with each tournament. My own memories of these tournaments is not that we watch a match of two equally great teams and that it's that what thwarted us, but that we look utterly lacklustre against poor teams. Quite simply we don't look fucking arsed against teams we should be getting wins against because we lower the bar to meet them.

Well, what a jammy group. A narrow win over Panama and at least a draw against Tunisia should see us squeeze through. I wouldn't give England much chance against Poland in the next round though.

Argentina's draw is tough. I'l get a prediction in early that they won't get out of that group B)

Here's a shocking stat.

Since '66, England have won just 6 knockout games in ANY tournaments.

Ecuador 06

Denmark 02

Spain 96

Belgium 90

Cameroon 90

Paraguay 86

One of them was on penalties and another was the last kick of the game in extra time. We've never won a European Championships knock out game within 120 mins.

Nah I'm the opposite. Can't wait for it. Most of it will probably be dull shite but it's the world cup and I'll watch what I can regardless.

Yeah I cant wait. The only football Ive watched apart from Forest for the last couple of months is the Champions League. I havent watched MOTD for ages and nothing from the Football League. World Cups and the Euros though always get me excited.

2010 was shit but 2014 was probably the best international tournament Ive watched and Im looking forward to this one too

I'd love to be up for it, but it's that bit about dull shite.

I suspect in reality, it's the perpetual disappointment of England that puts me off. I would for them to shove my words down my throat but I suspect I'm in for a long wait.

i'll probably be alright if I'm watching games where I'm not hung up on the outcome.

I quite like the World Cup to be honest, apart for England and the diving it's something to look forward to.

Not now obviously 'cause England have gone a bit shit, but in the past, I always said the difference between us and the likes of the Italians and Germans was that they knew how to win. We've had unlucky exits loads of times, I think up until when Seaman got lobbed on his line from 40 yards. From that game we've been shit which is why we're all a bit worn down by them.

Its massive news in this country that Wilshere isnt in the England squad, played 20 games in two seasons while in Germany no one gives a shit Emre Can isnt in the squad. He would be our best midfielder by a mile. Erik Lamela didnt get in to Argentinas too 35, hed be in our top 5.

I'm looking forward to it. I enjoy tournaments more now England are totally crap to be honest. When they were only a bit crap there was always a bit of false hope and then inevitable disappointment, now you can just relax and enjoy it.

Really never seen the appeal of Wilshire.

If Southgate leaves Dier Henderson Lingaard Lallana & Rashford out, England might look like a decent team in Russia but we all know they'll probably all be starting the tournament and when they fail it'll be because they've played too many games this season even though those mentioned (maybe Dier aside) have hardly played this calendar year. Stones too, only played 18 matches this season, will start over Maguire or Tarkowski who've both played 35+ and got better stats too. My starting XI would be:-

Pope,

Walker Tarkowski Maguire Bertrand

Sterling RLC Cook Sessegnon

Kane Vardy

If the likes of Tarkowski, Maguire and Mawson are considered to be amongst Englands best centre halfs then 2 points;

1. We will get beaten with ease by any side with a bit of movement and quality up top

2. Lascelles must have upset Southgate in some unforgivable way

Only the same way that Shelvey has!! We'll get beaten anyway so why not fuck off most the failures now and give others the chance? Shelvey & Lascelles should get chances too over Dier, Henderson, Cahill & Smalling for sure.

To be fair Southgate is being as bold as England manager as I can remember. He is casting aside the injured, the past it, and the ones who don't fit into his way of thinking.

Lascelles is worse on the ball than Smalling. Smalling got dropped for not being able to distribute the ball. Not hard to see Southgate's reasoning there.

I like Shelvey but he has one good game in every four, and I've seen him have some stinkers, not convinced that he is consistent enough to play for England at the moment.

Can you name many England players that are?!! Pope, Kane, Vardy, Walker & Sterling are the only ones imo
